Your Questions, Answered
Choosing a replacement final drive is an investment in your excavator, so it's natural to have questions. Below are some of the most common questions we receive from excavator owners and operators across New Zealand.
-
A final drive, sometimes called a travel motor, is the component that powers your excavator's tracks. It combines a hydraulic motor with a planetary gearbox to convert hydraulic power into the torque needed to drive the machine. We can also sell you you the planetary gear box separately.
-
A genuine final drive is sold under the excavator manufacturer's brand, such as Kubota or Komatsu.
An OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) final drive is produced by the original manufacturer that built the drive for the excavator manufacturer.
An aftermarket final drive is a replacement drive designed to meet the same application and performance requirements without carrying the original manufacturer's branding.
We specialise in supplying quality aftermarket final drives because they offer excellent value for many excavator owners.
-
Yes - provided they're sourced from a precision manufacturer.
Not all aftermarket drives are the same. That's why we work with a single trusted manufacturer whose products have also been independently assessed by a New Zealand-qualified metallurgist.
Every drive we sell is backed by a two-year unlimited-hour warranty.
-
We keep our business simple. We specialise in supplying new aftermarket final drives rather than operating a large repair workshop or selling thousands of different parts. Keeping our overheads low allows us to offer competitive pricing while still providing excellent customer support.
-
All our products are made by a single precision engineering specialist firm in China. They design and manufacture to world-leading standards. Since Aus Final Drives opened in 2015, and we opened in 2020, the quality of these drives has been tested and proven over 100,000s of working hours across New Zealand and Australia.
-
Every situation is different. Many customers replace only the failed drive, while others choose to replace both if they have similar operating hours.
Replacing both drives at the same time can help maintain even tracking performance and may reduce future downtime if the second drive is also approaching the end of its service life.
We're happy to discuss the pros and cons based on your machine.
We also provide a discount if you buy two drives and the quote for the 2nd drive is valid for 6 months.
-
Usually but there are some exceptions. If the drive on the other side is old, worn, badly maintained or end of life, our more modern drives may perform slightly differently. Some operators notice no difference, while others experience a slight drift.
We talk to you about what you use your excavator for, and how often you use it, before you purchase. This helps you make an informed decision.
-
We highly recommend customers have their drive fitted by a qualified mechanic. Incorrect installation, such as attaching the wrong hydraulic hose connections to the final drive’s ports, can damage the drive. If you have questions, we're happy to help.
-
Every new final drive comes with a two-year unlimited-hour warranty, giving you confidence long after installation.

Yes. We can arrange freight throughout New Zealand. Freight costs vary depending on the size and weight of the final drive and your location. We'll provide a freight quote before you place your order.
-
Use gear oil SAE80/90W, and change it every 250 hours. The handy 2.5 litre, and 1 litre packs shown below have pull out snorkels making it easy to pour into your drive and are readily available from places like Repco, Supercheap Auto. A 1 litre pack will be enough for most Drives up to 5-6 tonnes.
-
We cut open a smaller final drive so you can see the motor and gears.
